"Well, you should know I love you by now," he said, trying in vain to brush her off. He slid his glasses back on and turned back to the computer screen, hoping that she would let it rest but knowing full well that he was in for one of "those" conversations.

Why did women always do this, he wondered, especially at the most inopportune times. His ex-wife was the same way--he'd be up late in the study, trying to finish a proposal or some advertising copy that was due early the next morning, and she'd come in and want to "talk." And what about? Usually something they had rehashed several times already, or something that could wait until the next day when he wasn't under some heavy deadline.
