Even though the paper we delivered was printed in Dover, just across the New Hampshire line, it was the closest paper to Doughty Falls, so most people subscribed to it. Sure, there were the Sanford News and the York County Star, but they only came out once a week. A few people even subscribed to the Portland Press Herald, but the editor of my paper was smart and carried a little column about Doughty Falls every Tuesday and Saturday. It was usually just a bunch of gossip like who went on vacation and where they went and how the weather was and what souvenirs they brought, or maybe whose daughter was getting married and to whom, and where he was from and how much money he made along with a list of his entire family tree dating back to the Mayflower. But people at least got to see their own names or those of their neighbors once in a while, and it made people feel important to think that they actually knew someone who had his name in the newspaper.
